Topflight Junior Badminton League 2009/10
The Topflight Junior Badminton League began back in November 2009 with seven central-location match days and eight teams, culminating on Sunday 4th July 2010 for the final contests. The league is the only season long junior badminton competition running in Hampshire and is now in its third successful year. It began because of the lack of competition for juniors outside of national and county competitions and was seen as a great initiative to introduce club players to match play situations and bring on the young talent in this county – and it has not disappointed. This season’s competition saw a rise in teams from 6 to 8, which made the atmosphere and tension all the more enticing with some fantastically close matches. It is testament to all the local club organisers and players that this year again supplied a great spectacle for watching supporters and all participants should be very proud of their involvement.
The final match day was poised to be a cracker with Solent Eagles leading the way – a team that had never finished outside the top three but never previously lifted the title. In hot pursuit of Eagles was the Topflight Performance Centre’s first team and former two-time champions Thornden. Many were predicting a close final day with most unable to call who would lift the title due to only 6 points covering the top three places. The drama of the final encounters didn’t disappoint with all the top teams producing great results. However, a worthy and deserving winner emerged in the form of Solent Eagles who dispatched of their opponents with competent ease, to the delight of their strong fan base. Solent Eagles were a tribute to all clubs in the area as they played with passion, fairness and pride, especially pleasing the league organisers with their incredible team organisation skills.
The junior league success follows the recent national club championship title lifted by the Topflight seniors so there has never been a better time to join in the experience and get involved in one of the fastest and most dynamic sports around.
