Season 2007/8: Topflight Junior League Report
Season 2007/8 Winners - Thornden School

The Victor South Junior Badminton League's inaugural season saw six teams compete with a total of 66 players taking part over the year. Players were of school age and could not be part of the under-17 Hampshire County Team. League favourites and current national champions Thornden were the team to beat but experienced and successful teams like Henry Cort, Solent Eagles and Westgate were determined to give all they could to take the title. With the newly founded teams of the home club Topflight Badminton Academy and Romsey to cut their teeth in the pilot competition, the season was poised to be explosive. The format saw all teams play each other once over the season at designated match days and all three disciplines were represented with four singles, four level doubles and two mixed doubles matches per game.
The excitement and tension was seen throughout the season with close matches between all teams and was topped off with a thrilling finale on the final day with Thornden and Topflight battling for the crown. Thornden lead by three points going into the final day and managed to stave off a strong challenge from Topflight to finish off top of the pile and become the Champions, not an unfamiliar position for the school who recently represented England in the World School Badminton Championships in Menorca.
The success of the first year will mean a second league season will begin in October 2008 with double the number of teams spread across two divisions. For details of the 2008/09 Season click here.
